West Berlin before reunification: Time and again, we hear, read and see reports about Berlin's youth gangs, who make the city unsafe, are violent and commit crimes. The police's actions have only had moderate success. The Berlin Senate is therefore looking for other ways. The choice falls on street social work, a relatively new field of social work. The goal: to reach out to the young people from the gangs and find perspectives with them outside of violence and criminality. In this context, Gangway - Street Social Work in Berlin eV is founded in the year of reunification. This leads to an expansion of Gangway's area of work into former East Berlin - and to new challenges for the association! In the midst of social conflicts that were more than just an East-West problem, the young street workers were now supposed to reach young people across the city who felt forgotten in the frenzy of German reunification and no longer had any expectations of the adult world. They took their fears and frustrations, their radicalization, rivalry and willingness to use violence, but also their creativity and sense of community, to the streets of reunified Berlin. Some of the young people from back then are now street workers themselves, others have taken completely different paths. In this film, we take a look back with them and other companions at "our" Berlin in no time and provide insights into the development of social work that does not wait and set rules, but goes where people can be reached directly in their own lives and decide for themselves when, from whom and how they can accept support. The film has won several awards at the Sunrise Film Festival 2024, Courage Film Festival 2024, Berlin Kiez Film Festival 2024 and was nominated for the Sofia Film Festival 2024 & Berlin Dynamic Film Festival 2024.
