The first inhabitants of Villa Capriglio were called Marchisio. The “Marchisio vineyard”, whose construction began in 1706, was one of the many noble country residences that were located on the Turin hills. In 1746 it was still unfinished (it was finished in 1761) when it was sold to Giovanni Paolo Melina di Capriglio, taking the name it still has today. In three centuries, many have owned this house, but to summarize, it can be said that it has passed from the state property to the devil, fueling over time a series of legends that are sometimes lustful but very often macabre or frightening. After years of abandonment, restoration work began in 1971, but was soon interrupted and never resumed. Perhaps even those who worked in that house had heard the legends of the events that took place within those walls: according to some, in the basement there was a series of tunnels that led to a room used for black masses and satanic rites, so much so that the state property house has become in popular rumor a house of the devil. According to a legend that has been handed down for generations, however, the most frightening thing about Villa Capriglio is that on winter nights of full moon, when the fog falls, the house disappears into thin air, only to reappear in the morning. Of course these are fairy tales and legends, but anyone who grew up in those parts knows this story that sends shivers down their spines. And besides, the situation of Villa Capriglio is certainly not the rosiest. For a decade a cultural association has managed these spaces, both the residence and the surrounding park, but for several years now Villa Capriglio has been closed and abandoned, thus fueling the legends around its walls. Including the one indicating it as the set of some shots of Suspiria, a film by Dario Argento, a circumstance for which there is no evidence: probably the confusion is with Villa Scott, the Art Nouveau house in Deep Red. There is still a real estate ad on the web for Villa Capriglio, for sale for a few years.
