▶ Brothers' Song The three brothers were born and raised in Musoe-makteo, Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, which was called Goyang in Gyeonggi-do. The youngest, Jeon Byeong-hwa, graduated from high school and enlisted in 1949 as a career soldier. The year after Jeon Byeong-hwa enlisted, in 1950, the war between the South and the North broke out that no one could have imagined. Jeon Byeong-hwa, the youngest, who fought in frontline battles where life and death were at stake, advanced to the northernmost front line where the Duman River can be seen, but came down south due to the intervention of the Chinese army. He participated in the Battle of Wolbi Mountain, which raised the front line in Gangwon-do, and died there. He was 20 years old. Jeon Byeong-hwa was buried in the Seoul National Cemetery in 1959. The eldest son, Jeon Byeong-seop, was an ordinary young man who dreamed of becoming an artistic gymnast. When the war broke out, he eagerly awaited news of the youngest Jeon Byeong-hwa's battle and voluntarily enlisted on December 30, 1950. Assigned to the 8th Division, Jeon Byeong-seop fought in a fierce battle and participated in the Battle of Nojeonpyeong, a defensive battle in Gangwon-do supporting the US 10th Corps. He went missing, leaving behind only a death notice. The second son, Jeon Byeong-cheol, also followed his two brothers into the 625 War in June 1951, but was assigned to the rear support unit and worked at the Busan logistics unit before safely completing his military service in 1955. Jeon Byeong-cheol, the only survivor, missed his older brother Jeon Byeong-seop, whose whereabouts were unknown, whenever he saw his younger brother Jeon Byeong-hwa buried in the Seoul National Cemetery. ▶ Until the remains of the eldest son Jeon Byeong-seop, who had gone missing, were exhumed, Jeon Byeong-cheol donated his DNA in 2011 by participating in an event to collect genetic samples from bereaved families hosted by the Ministry of National Defense Remains Excavation and Identification Team. Ten years later, in 2021, Jeon Byeong-seop's remains were miraculously discovered at the Nojeonpyeong Battlefield in Inje where he died. After a long verification process, the remains were identified as Jeon Byeong-seop in 2023. The active work of the Remains Excavation and Identification Team has been successful in continuously excavating the remains. The 625 War Remains Excavation Operation Site, where you can see the fierce battle of 1951 up close. The Yeoncheon Jinmyeongsan Excavation Site, where excavation began in April 2024, is seeing great results in excavating the remains as a cave-type fort is discovered. The remains of the cave fort, which were mainly destroyed by artillery fire, are scattered in pieces. With the determination that not a single piece of remains can be missed, the soldiers of the Ministry of National Defense Remains Excavation and Identification Team are working hard to excavate the remains. ▶ The last remaining chance, the bereaved family With the development of genetic sampling technology, if you donate your genes, you can find your family no matter how small the remains are with the development of genetic identification technology. The remains of Jeon Byeong-seop, a brother who protected the country, were also excavated in 2021, but in 2023, genetic technology was improved and his identity was confirmed. ▶ We will find your family. The Ministry of National Defense Remains Excavation and Identification Division has a bereaved family division dedicated to the bereaved families waiting for their patriotic heroes. The bereaved family division investigates the military records of the veterans who are waiting for their families, manages their war records, and immediately connects them with their families when their remains are excavated to find their families. It also searches for the bereaved families whose remains have undergone genetic testing to deliver good news, and carries out administrative tasks for the funeral procedures. The identities of Jeon Byeong-seop and Jeon Byeong-cheol, whose identities have been confirmed, are confirmed through a comparison of old military records and various paperwork, and the bereaved families are notified of the identity confirmation, and the official procedures for national heroes are carried out through a patriotic homecoming ceremony. The bereaved families and the funeral procedures for the remains are discussed later. Jeon Byeong-seop's remains were buried together with Jeon Byeong-hwa at the National Seoul Memorial Park at the request of the bereaved family. ※ This video is [Documentary On 6.25 Special Project - Brothers' Song] that aired on June 22, 2024. #6.25 #Missing #War ✔KBS Documentary KBS Official YouTube Channel [KBS Documentary] 🔔Subscribe👍Like➡️ / @kbsdocumentary 📝Contact: [email protected] Copyright ⓒ KBS.
