What could happen? Can my equipment or my transformer burn out? If I have a 127/220V transformer and accidentally connect 220V where I should connect 127V, are my installation, transformer or equipment at risk? To answer this question, let's understand what a 127/220V transformer does. Let's first find the transformation ratio, that is, how many times an applied voltage is increased or reduced. If we divide 220 by 127, we get 1.73, which is our transformation ratio. This means that the voltage input to the 127V side is increased by 1.73 times and the voltage input to the 220V side is decreased by 1.73 times. If all of this is correct, if we mistakenly connect 220V to the side designed for 127V, we would have an increase of 220V x 1.73, resulting in 380V on the 220 side. This would certainly burn out the equipment connected at this point. Furthermore, we must also remember that the transformer we are using is an autotransformer, that is, we have an electrical connection between the primary and secondary. If the primary has a certain impedance and I apply 127V, we will have a certain current, even without a load. In theory, if we apply 220V to the same impedance, we will have a higher current and possibly the internal thermal device will act or the transformer will burn out.
