Several approaches have been proposed for the treatment of HPV lesions but, fundamentally, therapeutic strategies are divided into two categories, surgical and medical therapies, whose final goal is the localized elimination of the infected tissue. Surgical therapies include chemical ablative treatments or physical techniques. They are mostly applied by the doctor, therefore in a healthcare environment. Medical therapy is indicated for condylomatous lesions and consists of antivirals and immunomodulators. No therapy has been shown to be able to eradicate HPV; HPV infection probably persists throughout the patient's life in a latency state in the perilesional skin and becomes intermittently contagious; genital warts, in fact, recur even after appropriate therapy in a high percentage of patients. Recent scientific studies have shown how some natural substances such as epigallocatechin gallate contained in green tea, folic acid and vitamin B12 help reduce the persistence of HPV in infected cells and contribute to lowering the risk of infection.
