Mr. Wiesio presents a practical step-by-step guide on how to prune an apple tree. 1. If you see a shoot that grows as tall and thick as the top shoot – cut one. 2. Find all the branches growing inwards and cut them out – they shade the crown. 3. If you see shoots growing straight up, like an antenna on a car – cut them all out. 4. Look for a branch growing from underneath another and cut it out. 5. Find a branch fork and cut one out. 6. See if any of the branches cross. If so, remove one. 7. If you see two large branches growing in almost the same direction – leave the one that grows more horizontally. 8. If the tree crowns touch each other – separate them… with scissors. 9. After cutting, secure the wounds left by large branches and limbs.
