This is nothing new: we know that universities do a very poor job of training master's students in research methodology. However, last year I was confronted with some truly dramatic situations, with research dissertations that received grades above 17/20 without the students ever having done the slightest documentary research in specialized databases. The bibliographies mainly included internet links to Wikipedia, YouTube and online newspaper articles, which is simply shocking for any experienced researcher. Needless to say, I often play the wrong role, explaining to a large number of young researchers that I support that the basics of research have not been acquired, despite the grade obtained for the dissertation. Last year, I spent far too much time explaining the difference between academic research methodology and Google search methodology, and training doctoral candidates – and even doctoral students – in the basics of documentary research. So I decided to design for you an article and a video dedicated to these basics of documentary research, in the hope that it will help you understand the challenges of academic research. The goal is also to allow you to put into practice the advice that I give you on a daily basis on the assembly and design of your doctoral project: you will never be able to create convincing projects and build projects of excellence if you do not first master these basics. ▬▬▬▬▬ SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬▬ 2:05 What is documentary research? 5:02 Conducting documentary research without access to specialized databases in your discipline (resuming studies) 9:25 Conducting documentary research when you have access to specialized databases in your discipline (master's students and doctoral students) ▬▬▬▬▬ WHO AM I? ▬▬▬▬▬▬ My name is Erika Dupont, I have been a PhD student in contemporary art history since 2020. Without funding for three years, I completed my thesis thanks to funding from the very prestigious Yale University. During my studies, I was faced with many questions and like most PhD students, I was very poorly supported in all my efforts and my journey has really been that of a fighter. I have always been keen to help PhD students. At the beginning of my doctoral studies, I was elected to represent PhD students on the Laboratory Councils and the doctoral school, and now I want to devote myself entirely to supporting PhD students. Why? Because if I had been supported myself, I would have saved precious time, I would have made fewer mistakes, I would have fumbled less and I would have asserted myself much more quickly in the research community. I would have lost much less energy and probably earned my living much sooner. Instead, I remained precarious for years and today, I want to help as many doctoral students as possible to get out of this precariousness by giving them the keys that I acquired through the sweat of my brow. 🛎 SUBSCRIBE! 🛎 👉 / @erikadupont 👉 The Blog: https://erikadupont.com/blog/ 👉 Facebook: / dupont.erika 👉 Insta: / erika.dupont_vstein
