The cycle path is the most important infrastructure for bicycle circulation in urban areas, consisting of a structure that is completely segregated from motorized traffic and, therefore, is the road that offers the highest level of safety and comfort for cyclists. The cycle path is part of a cycle path system that consists of an integrated network made up of several elements with characteristics that meet the needs of cyclists when traveling in urban areas, especially in terms of safety and comfort. Among the elements that make up the cycle path system are shared traffic lanes, cycle lanes, bicycle racks, bicycle parking, intermodal terminals, walkways and cycle paths. Cycle paths are divided into two main types: unidirectional (in one direction) or bidirectional (in both directions). The physical separation between cyclists and cars can be achieved by means of obstacles, a line of parking spaces for vehicles, flowerbeds, etc. • The adoption of cycle paths or cycle lanes depends on the speed and flow of motorized vehicles. • On roads with a maximum speed of over 60 km/h, cycle paths should be adopted. Width • One-way cycle paths and cycle lanes must have a minimum width of 1.20 m. Two-way cycle paths and cycle lanes must have a minimum width of 2.50 m. These measurements consider exclusively the width for the movement of cyclists, not considering physical segregation (studs and/or paint) or the road gutter. • A moving bicycle requires an average width of 1 m. However, it is important that the infrastructure takes into account a 10 cm clearance on each side. • One-way cycle paths are preferable, since they allow cyclists to circulate in the same flow as other vehicles and, consequently, more predictable movements for other road users; these actions reduce the possibility of collisions and run-overs at intersections. Intersections • Horizontal signage at intersections is essential to reduce the risk of accidents between bicycles and motor vehicles. Intersections should be highlighted with red paint on the pavement, parallel lines made up of white parallelograms (elephant feet) and signs indicating the direction of bicycle traffic. • At complex intersections without traffic lights, it is important to highlight, through markings, the priority that pedestrians and cyclists have in relation to other vehicles. Signs at these intersections should guide drivers in order to avoid conflicts and accidents. Pavement • The pavement used in the cycling infrastructure should be regular, impermeable, non-slip and have a pleasant appearance, so that it is attractive and comfortable for users. • Uniform and molded in loco coverings, such as concrete and asphalt, are recommended. • Interlocking blocks or other materials that cause vibration due to recurring joints are not recommended. • In cases where the pavement is painted, it is important that the paint used is non-slip, resistant to breakage and of good quality so as to maintain the original color. ------------------------------------------------------ ????
