This is a summary of the episode 'City for Sale' from 2019. Watch the full episode here: https://www.vpro.nl/programmas/tegenl... Major cities around the world have become a magnet for newcomers, tourists, expats and laptop nomads. In our capital Amsterdam, the pressure is also increasing. In the next fifteen years, the city must grow to the magical number of 1 million inhabitants. Will we follow in the footsteps of London or Paris, where the middle class is disappearing? What does that do to the capital and is there anything that can be done about it? The super-deluxe apartments that are currently being built around Amsterdam's Dam and on the banks of the Amstel and IJ illustrate how the city centre is becoming too expensive for most people to live there. This creates a waterbed effect for surrounding neighbourhoods. The Indische Buurt is one such neighbourhood where the change in the city is clearly visible. For example, where the Javastraat was still impoverished seven years ago and phone shops and criminal practices determined the streetscape, it is now hip & happening. And with the exception of a few greengrocers, almost completely 'gentrified'. Can the tide still be turned and can the soul of the city be preserved? Because who actually owns the city of the future?
