Learn more: https://nossaenergia.petrobras.com.br/ In the last episode of our SuperTech series, we will discover how oil becomes the gasoline that fuels our cars. We went to the Presidente Bernardes Refinery, in Cubatão, to learn about the entire process. Oil is made up of organic molecules composed of several carbon atoms linked together, forming a chain. In addition to carbon, it practically only has hydrogen, which is why it is a hydrocarbon. But oil is not made up of just one type of molecule. There are many different molecules, from methane, which has only one carbon atom, to molecules with dozens of carbons linked together. To be able to use oil for different purposes, it is separated into groups of similar molecules, which can still go through several transformation processes until reaching the final product. In the refinery, this transformation occurs using heat, giving rise to petroleum derivatives. So, do you want to understand better how all this happens?
