In the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, drones, which were barely used two years ago, are now making a difference. But how? Using images and data from attacks, experts, and conversations with soldiers, we analyze the drone war between Ukraine and Russia. For this research, we used drone images that appeared on social media. We collected images via Telegram, X, and YouTube. The videos come from Ukrainian and Russian soldiers and brigades that are fighting on the front lines themselves or from military bloggers. It is important to realize that these sources paint an incomplete picture, because both sides mainly share information that is positive for them. We verified the drone images by determining the location as precisely as possible. Where possible, we also verified the time of recording and what type of drone and ammunition was used. We used data from geolocation platform GeoConfirmed (https://geoconfirmed.org) to map the total number of drone flights from February 2023 to February 2024. The information about the number of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory comes from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED).
