Hardly anyone wants to profess Christianity these days. Journalist Tobias Haberl does so and finds that he is ridiculed or even discriminated against for it. In a conversation with Wolfram Eilenberger, he explains what today's society could learn from believers. Topics in this episode: 00:00 What is it like to be a believer today, Tobias Haberl? 09:38 What significance does faith have for your roots? 16:01 Is faith something political for you? 24:38 How does life feel for a believer? 34:36 Does good lead to God? 48:08 How do you explain the existence of suffering? Journalist and author Tobias Haberl is a devout Catholic. He finds that he has to justify this more and more often, both in his private and professional life. What was self-evident in his childhood, when the vast majority belonged to a Christian denomination, seems to have become something unheard of. Even if they are only half sentences or subtle glances, people who demand tolerance for minorities make him feel like he has missed the leap into the present. Haberl also struggles with the mistakes of the church, but in his book "Among Heathens. Why I Still Remain a Christian" he argues that in connection with religion we should not only talk about abuse, cover-ups and the long overdue modernization. Rather, he asks the question of what is lost when we give up our faith. Is the inner emptiness and exhaustion that he perceives in others and which is attempted to be satisfied by satisfying ever new needs not a consequence of loss of faith? In conversation with Wolfram Eilenberger, he explains why life does not become freer when God is disposed of, and why the appeal of believing lies precisely in the fact that God cannot be proven.
