Debate organized as part of the XXII Science Festival in Warsaw - astrophysicists prof. Marek Abramowicz and prof. Krzysztof Meissner and biologist prof. Ewa Bartnik, September 30, 2018 [0h45min] Scientists discuss how universal laws of nature have been discovered, understood and described by scientists throughout history https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/skad... What does it mean that the laws of nature are universal? How has their understanding changed throughout history? Answers to these questions were provided by participants of the debate organized during the XXII Science Festival in Warsaw: astrophysicists prof. Marek Abramowicz and prof. Krzysztof Meissner and biologist prof. Ewa Bartnik. The discussion was opened by prof. Abramowicz, who spoke about the theory of relativity and its relationship with the universal law of gravitation formulated by Isaac Newton. The astrophysicist wondered whether the universal law of gravity could be considered a universal law of nature if its scope of application was limited. Prof. Meissner drew attention to the immutability of the laws of nature, which allows science to accumulate knowledge. As he stated, only the paradigm of describing them has changed over the course of history. Prof. Bartnik said that in biology, only the theory of evolution can be considered fully universal - there are exceptions to the others. In the second part of the debate, scientists shared their opinions on whether the correlation of factors that make life possible is the result of chance or the conscious work of a transcendent force.
