► It is July 5, 1884. The German African explorer Gustav Nachtigal reaches the coast of the West African kingdom of Togo. His goal: to sign a protection treaty that places the small coastal region under the protection of the German Empire. A few hours later, in the presence of the local ruler Mlapa III, the treaty is signed. Togo, as tiny as it may be compared to the other colonial endeavors of the European powers, is now officially the first German colony in West Africa. During the Berlin Conference of 1884/85, the German colonial empire was officially recognized, and the borders of the Togo colony were established in the following years through diplomatic negotiations with the neighboring colonial powers Great Britain and France. But what drives the Germans to this remote region, how do they shape their rule, and how does it come about that Togo is named the only economically viable German colony?
