At the beginning of the 16th century, France discovered and explored Canada. A few decades later, under the reign of Henry IV, a first settlement was founded in the region to organize fishing and the fur trade. Over time, wars, alliances and migrations, the French presence grew stronger in Canada in opposition to the English presence, so much so that in 1760 there were more than 70,000 French people living in New France, while the latter extended over a gigantic territory. In this video, we will look at the history of French colonization in North America, from the first explorations of Jacques Cartier to the fall of Montreal during the Seven Years' War.
