An article published in the scientific journal Journal of Gerontology indicates that at least 1.76 million Brazilians over the age of 60 live with some form of dementia, with 40% to 60% of these cases being Alzheimer's. The total number of diagnoses in 2019 was about 20% higher than four years earlier, when it was estimated that there were 1.48 million people with dementia in Brazil. Dementia is one of the main causes of disability in the elderly and has a physical, psychological, social and economic impact on both people with the disease and those who care for them. However, only a quarter of countries worldwide have a national policy, strategy or plan to support people with dementia and their families, according to the report “Global status report on the public health response to dementia”. The care needed for people with dementia includes primary health care, specialized care, community-based services, rehabilitation, long-term care and palliative care.
