Hong Kong, the Asian metropolis on the South China Sea: Neon signs have long been the signature of this city, formed by master hands in hidden workshops. They merge Far Eastern and Western culture in a unique way. But LED is replacing the large billboards - a handful of masters and enthusiasts of the trade are fighting back. Hong Kong has always been densely populated, with countless small shops crammed into the streets. Each shop has its own neon sign. Over the years, these have become denser and larger, vying for every inch. This is how the sea of neon signs that made Hong Kong so famous came about. But the city is changing and LED panels are replacing the old neon art. The young journalist Cardin Chan has dedicated herself to saving the traditions of her hometown and thus also the neon signs. She searches for and documents the old masters, visits them in their narrow backyard workshops, encourages them to keep going, arranges contacts and orders. With the camera team from "GEO Reportage" she visits the neon master Wu Chi-Kai, who can no longer make a living from his craft alone - the orders have become too rare. Or Hong Kong's calligraphy legend, Master Fung Siu Wah, who masters the thousands of years old art of writing Chinese characters like no other. "Hong Kong has always been a trading port, especially after it became a British colony. It was the epitome of an East meets West culture. You can see that everywhere in the city. Chinese calligraphy is more traditional and down-to-earth and Western elements are more sculptural. It is the combination of the two that makes Hong Kong Neon so incomparable." There is still hope that the art of the old masters will stay alive - so that they may shine for a long time to come: the neon signs of Hong Kong.
