It is believed that the history of Maranhão began around 10,000 years ago with the arrival of the first people in this region. Several archaeological finds from over 6,000 years ago are evidence of human occupation on the island of São Luís, providing evidence of the occupation of these territories by the ancestral peoples who arrived from the Amazon region. With the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494, the current territory of Maranhão became part of the Portuguese possessions in South America. The French arrived on Upaon-Açu Island in 1612 and founded the city of São Luís, the only Brazilian capital founded by the French. However, in 1615, the French were expelled by Portuguese forces and, from that moment on, the Portuguese colonization of the region began in earnest. During the colonial period, the Captaincy of Maranhão prospered, mainly thanks to the cultivation of cotton, a product in high demand due to the industrial revolution. The region became one of the most prosperous in the country and the fourth largest Brazilian economy in the first half of the 18th century. But with the end of the American Civil War in 1865, the then Province of Maranhão lost space in cotton exports and collapsed. From the 20th century onwards, some investments were made in Maranhão to strengthen agricultural production and stimulate the economy, but the state's social indicators are still among the worst in Brazil. In this video, you will learn in more detail about the history of this important Brazilian state and understand how Maranhão got to its current situation.
