This time, we looked into the history of Hachioji. Hachioji started as a castle town of "Takiyama Castle" and "Hachioji Castle", and developed as a post town on the "Koshu Kaido" road during the Edo period. Silkworm farming and weaving have been thriving since ancient times, and since the Edo period it has been called "Soto", and developed as a distribution base for cocoons, raw silk, and textiles. In the Meiji period, the textile industry and the modernization of the city progressed, and in the Taisho period, it was incorporated as a city, the second largest in Tokyo Prefecture after Tokyo City. In the prewar Showa period, it became a popular tourist destination, centered on "Tama Imperial Mausoleum" and "Mount Takao". Although it suffered great damage from air raids during the Pacific War, it made a remarkable recovery after the war and developed into a commercial city, with one of the largest shopping districts in the country being born.
