The history of Acre is quite unique. Before becoming part of Brazil, Acre was part of the Spanish possessions in South America, until it was purchased from Bolivia by Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century. The history of Acre is also marked by the rubber industry, as the state played a major role in what became known as the Rubber Cycle, playing a major role in the Brazilian economy in the first half of the 20th century. Despite being incorporated into Brazilian territory in 1903, Acre remained a Federal Territory until 1962, when it was elevated to the status of State.
