The world's largest nuclear disaster, which occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, is remembered for its results in the shadow of the Russia-Ukraine War in its 38th year. The accident that occurred at the power plant, 110 kilometers from the Ukrainian capital Kiev, on April 26, 1986, retains its place in memories, while its results continue to be on the international agenda. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was described as one of the greatest achievements of Soviet science. The explosion at that time occurred in the 4th reactor after a safety test that lasted 1 hour and 24 minutes went out of control. The 2,000-ton roof blew off in the explosion and 8 tons of radioactive fuel mixed into the atmosphere. 31 of the firefighters who extinguished the fire at the reactor lost their lives at the scene due to exposure to high levels of radiation. While the collapsed reactor continued to emit lethal radiation, Soviet authorities did everything they could to conceal the incident. Secret preparations were made for the evacuation of the city of Pripyat, where workers and their families at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant lived, and the evacuation could only begin the following afternoon. Within three hours, Pripyat had become a ghost town, and in the following days, thousands of tons of chemical materials were dropped on the exploded reactor by helicopters. The toxic cloud that emerged after the explosion affected parts of Russia and Europe, especially Ukraine and Belarus. Ten days later, the toxic clouds reached the USA, Canada and even Japan. According to World Health Organization data, 600 thousand people living, working, performing security services, and participating in the liquidation and cleanup operations within a 30-kilometer area of the disaster were exposed to high doses of radiation. Approximately 5 million people in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia continue to live in areas at risk of radiation. Following the disaster, cancer types including leukemia and thyroid cancer, cataracts and congenital pathological disorders in babies increased in the countries in the region. In addition to psychological disorders, problems arose due to exclusion in social relationships. 120 thousand people exposed to high levels of radiation were at risk of dying from cancer. The results of the disaster have also been a topic of discussion in Turkey, with the then Minister of Industry and Trade, Cahit Aral, posing in front of cameras drinking tea to deny claims that there was radiation in the tea. Although decades have passed since the Chernobyl explosion, efforts to erase the traces of the disaster are still ongoing. The 4th reactor building, where the explosion occurred and the risk of spreading radiation continues, was completely covered with a special steel tent. A special steel tent in the shape of an arch was built to reduce the risk to zero in the reactor, which was covered with concrete. The tent was moved over the reactor block in November 2016 and the reactor was completely isolated. The work was financed with the support of 44 countries, including the member states of the European Union and Turkey. According to Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant officials, the radioactive fuel in the buildings has been cleaned and the risk effect has been reduced ten thousandfold. After the accident, the situation at the plant was stabilized, and work continues to isolate, liquidate and rehabilitate the facilities. It is stated that the work can only be completed with international participation, and that people will only be able to return to 60 percent of the area around Chernobyl after 60 years. Even if the isolation, liquidate and rehabilitation work is completed, settlement in 40 percent of the region will never be possible. According to the decision of the Ukrainian Parliament, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant will be completely dismantled by 2065. According to the program, in the first stage between 2010-2013, nuclear fuel was moved from the plants to storage facilities. In the second stage between 2013-2022, the reactors were taken under protection and the reactor where the accident occurred was isolated. In the third stage covering the years 2022-2045, experts will observe the decrease in radiation after isolation. In the final stage between 2045-2065, the plant will be dismantled and cleaned. #chernobyl #ukraine #russia FOLLOW ANADOLU AGENCY ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Website: http://www.aa.com.tr Twitter: / anadoluajansi Facebook: / anadoluajansi Instagram: / anadoluajansi Telegram: https://t.me/anadoluajansi ABOUT ANADOLU AGENCY YOUTUBE CHANNEL: Anadolu Agency's YouTube channel features the day's featured news, multimedia works and documentaries in different categories.
