The Tabernas Desert is the only desert in Europe. It has been protected as a wilderness area (natural park) since 1989 and covers 280 square kilometres. Wedged between the Sierra de los Flabres and the Sierra Alhamilla, this region does not benefit from the humidity of the sea, even though it is close by. There is almost no precipitation, or only torrential rain that the arid terrain cannot hold, thus causing its characteristic badland landscapes through erosion. Due to its resemblance to the Far West, the deserts of North Africa and Jordan, the Tabernas Desert became a capital of the film industry in the 1940s. There were up to 14 western villages built for filming. Texas Hollywood is the only one still in operation. Mini Hollywood and Western Leone are now just tourist attraction parks. All categories combined, more than 300 films have used the varied natural settings of the Tabernas desert. Filming is still taking place there today (e.g. Terminator: Dark Fate, in 2019). But beyond this cinematic appeal, we have discovered its great geological wealth. You can hike there, without really getting lost, to marvel at its incredible rock structures. More than real trails, you can follow more or less marked routes, relying on a good sense of direction or a GPS, some sections of dirt roads and more often the beds of old dried-up rivers, which are used for guided tours in 4x4s. Curiosities such as Las Salinas (the salt flats), el Barranco del Infierno (the ravine of hell) and Las Colas de Dragon (the dragon's tails) are really worth the detour and will delight young and old alike!
