The Golden Seal "King of Na" (National Treasure, Fukuoka City Museum) was discovered by chance during farm work on Shikanoshima Island (a small island in Hakata Bay connected by a sandbar called Umi no Nakamichi) during the Edo period (1784). The appraiser, Kamei Nanmei (Confucian scholar of the Fukuoka Domain / 1743-1814), explained the origin of the Golden Seal by quoting a passage from the Eastern Barbarians section of the Book of the Later Han (57 AD) that says "Emperor Guangwu bestowed the Golden Seal on an envoy from Wakoku (Japan)," and this has become the accepted theory. But is it really true?
