We have already watched part of the story of Henry Christophe's life in a previous video: • President Jean-Pierre Boyer - March 30... . We find that it is more complete to introduce you to the character in what made him one of the leading figures of the Haitian War of Independence. Christophe was only president of Haiti on the day of his election. He was forced to share his power with two of his best ENEMIES since the War of the South: Pétion and Boyer. It should be noted that between these generals, there was a real enmity, since after having fought Dessalines at the Crête-à-Pierrot, Pétion, it is said, had him assassinated at Pont-Rouge, and subsequently organized a coup d'état against Christophe, which caused the division of the country. The blacks, once again, had just been victims of betrayal on the part of the mulattoes. The latter wanted power at all costs, and they got it and kept it for a very long time. And even after the death of King Henry I, Boyer still held a grudge against his achievements: "Finally destroyed, this nest of conspirators" he said when he learned that an earthquake had completely destroyed the city of Le Cap. So, we can assume that he did not participate in its reconstruction, although two years earlier he had seized millions of gold and silver gourdes found in the citadel and elsewhere in the fallen kingdom. For years, even the name of Dessalines was erased from the memory of Haitians. But, thanks to the majesty of the citadel, which, perched on the Bonnet à l'évêque, seemed indestructible and untouchable, they were not able to erase the memory of Christophe from history. The fort was an inconvenient witness. In addition, we inherited their quarrel. Like this latent war of the flag that divides historians and part of the population. Let us remember that at the split, the colors of the flag of the Republic of Haiti were blue and red and that of the State of Haiti black and red. When Boyer reunified the country he simply imposed his flag on the entire national territory. Under the Duvalier governments, it became black and red. However, after the fall of Baby Doc, the nation, in a referendum, voted for the two-color Blue and red, rejecting at the same time that of Dessalines, which Duvalier senior, rightly or wrongly, had imposed on us in 1964. It is nevertheless regrettable that the constituents of 1987 did not offer us a consensus flag: a tricolor for example: blue, black and red, to stop the bickering. But, in our country, emotions have always taken precedence over reason. We had not been able to take advantage of this opportunity to weave, a little tighter, our links with our brothers from all levels of Haitian society. I suspect these same emotions of pushing our leaders to neglect potential sources of income, by choosing not to rebuild the Sans-souci Palace, to make it, with the citadel, a must-see favorite site for tourists. Too bad, Haiti will remain the only woman, mother of 12 million children not to be able to take advantage of her beauty and her finery to improve her lot and prepare her future. edgardlouis Reference: • Yon ti Bout Istwa - Wa Henri Christophe . edgardlouis
