Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is an acquired genetic disease that causes a defect in the red blood cell membrane and causes hemolytic anemia. It is classified within hemolytic anemias because it is caused by intrinsic defects in red blood cells. Anemia is the situation in which red blood cells are not able to transport enough oxygen to the cells due to a lack of hemoglobin. In paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, this hemolysis is influenced by a genetic defect in the formation of the red blood cell membrane that makes them structurally weak and they break down more easily without reaching their useful life. For the disease to develop, there must also be a clonal expansion of the marrow (production of numerous cells by the marrow). Some symptoms are: fatigue, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), dizziness, palpitations.
