We have several episodes on city design in Fنجان, but this episode is completely different. Our guest is Dr. Abdullah bin Junaidib, the designer of the projects of the Two Holy Mosques. Having the episode with the designer of the mosque and learning about his way of thinking about architecture and urban design of the city gives us a clear picture of how he designed the mosque in this way. We first talked about what architecture and the city are, which my guest sees as distorted and incomprehensible to most Saudi people. He expanded on the problems of residential neighborhoods in Saudi cities and the role of the city’s municipality in solving them. Then we moved on to talk about his city, Jeddah. Ibn Junaidib loves Jeddah very much. He says that Jeddah is the most vibrant Saudi city, and that we are able to bring many parts of it back to life by simply hitting the car. We also talked about the difference between it and Riyadh in terms of density, design and planning. Ibn Junaidib says that the primary goal of architecture is to amaze. Once you enter the third expansion of the mosque, you will be amazed by every part of it. However, we cannot talk about the mosque in isolation from Mecca and the Mecca community. Was the mosque able to employ the Mecca community in its design? The episode ended with a discussion about his experience in designing and engineering the Grand Mosque, why the design of the Grand Mosque did not take into account the Makkan identity in its construction, how the circumambulation area and courtyards were designed, what mechanism is used to organize crowds in the Grand Mosque, and does it need a fourth expansion?
