The book is considered her most authoritative philosophical text - but the author did not see herself as a philosopher. So let's start with the question: who was Hannah Arendt actually? Hannah was born in 1906 in Linden, now a district of Hanover. Even as a little girl she showed a clever mind and was particularly encouraged by her mother. For example, her mother read Marcel Proust with her in the original French and kept a conscientious diary of her daughter's development. As she got older, Hannah also used her father's library. At just 14 years of age she was reading philosophical works, such as those by Kant and Kierkegaard. As a student she then flirted with Martin Heidegger and began a career as a writer. Arendt once answered her motivation for writing: "What is essential for me is that I must understand. For me, this understanding also includes writing.
