John 11 The Resurrection of Lazarus 1 Lazarus was sick, from Bethany, from the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 This Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was the same one who anointed the Lord with balm and wiped his feet with her hair. 3 So the sisters of Lazarus sent and said to Jesus: Lord, he whom you love is sick. 4 When he received the news, Jesus said: This illness is not for death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then he said to his disciples: Let us go to Judea again. 8 The disciples said to him: Master, even now the Jews were trying to stone you, and are you going back there? 9 Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; 10 But if he walks at night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him. 11 This he said and then he added to them: Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going to wake him up. 12 So the disciples said to him, Lord, if he sleeps, he will be saved. 13 But Jesus had spoken concerning the death of Lazarus; but they supposed he had spoken of the rest of sleep. 14 Then Jesus said to them clearly: Lazarus is dead; 15 and for your sakes I rejoice that I was not there, that you may believe; but let's go to him. 16 Then Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go and die with him. 17 When Jesus arrived, he found Lazarus already buried four days ago. 18 Now Bethany was about fifteen furlongs near Jerusalem. 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him; Maria, however, sat at home. 21 So Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I also know that even now, whatever you ask of God, God will give it to you. 23 Jesus said to him: Your brother will rise again. 24 I know, replied Martha, that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. 25 Jesus said to him: I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that? 27 Yes, Lord, she replied, I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God who should come into the world. 28 When he had said this, he withdrew and called his sister Mary, and said to her privately: The Master has come and calls you. 29 When she heard this, she got up quickly and went to him, 30 for Jesus had not yet entered the village, but remained where Martha had seen him. 31 When the Jews who were with Mary at home and were comforting her saw her get up quickly and go out, they followed her, assuming that she was going to the tomb to weep. 32 When Mary came to the place where Jesus was, when she saw him, she fell at his feet, saying: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 Jesus, seeing her crying, and the Jews who were with her, was moved in spirit and moved. 34 And he asked, Where did you bury him? They answered him: Lord, come and see! 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, See how much I loved him. 37 But some objected: Could he not, who opened the blind man's eyes, prevent him from dying? 38 Jesus, shaking within himself again, went to the tomb; This was a cave at the entrance to which a stone had been placed. 39 Then Jesus commanded: Take away the stone. Marta, the dead man's sister, said to him: Lord, it already smells bad, because it is already four days. 40 Jesus answered him, Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone. And Jesus, lifting up his eyes to heaven, said: Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 Moreover, I knew that you always hear me, but I spoke this way because of the crowd present, so that they may believe that you sent me. 43 And when he had said this, he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! 44 He who had been dead came out, his feet and hands bound with bandages and his face wrapped in a scarf. Then Jesus commanded them: Untie him and let him go. 45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, seeing what Jesus had done, believed in him. 46 Others, however, went to the Pharisees and told them about the deeds that Jesus had done.
