God and Man A Sermon by Pope Shenouda III † 05/09/1993 The oldest relationship, and the most enduring relationship, is the relationship between God and man. It is an eternal relationship, when we were an idea in God’s mind, and a pleasure in His heart. It is an everlasting relationship, because it never ends. As for relationships with people, they are relationships linked to a specific time, a specific place on earth, and a specific purpose. People’s relationships continue forever, if they participate together in doing good, and in pleasing God, and are thus enabled to meet together in the bosom of God, in eternity. So the permanent and stable relationship is the relationship with God. The relationship with people is also permanent and stable, if God is a party to it (read another article on this topic here on St-Takla.org in the Questions and Articles section). If this relationship is linked to one of God’s commandments, and to one of the sublime values that God has established as a basis for dealings between people. Other than this, it is fleeting. If the relationship with God is like this, it should be placed at the top of our concerns, and we should prefer it over everything and everyone, and we should also prefer it over the self and its requirements. If the love of God clashes with any other love, it makes God before all, as He said with His pure mouth: (He who loves father and mother more than Me is not worthy of Me). Thus, we do not love anyone, nor do we flatter or please anyone at the expense of our love for God. As the Apostle said: (If I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ) (Galatians 1:10). Not even the self, for the sake of God, man is ready to deny himself and carry his cross. Those who loved God with all their heart and mind according to the commandment, devoted themselves to Him completely, like the solitary fathers, whose motto was (dissolution from all to bond with the One). Let God be for us, not only the first, but the whole. He is the one with whom we will live in eternity, and by our love for Him our destiny is determined, and the type of our life is determined.
