This week we visited the village built at the top of Serra do Carola, located about 19 km from the city of Serro. Affectionately nicknamed “Vila da Capelinha” because it is where a religious pilgrimage and a jubilee take place that dates back more than a century. Nanza Melo, who is part of the Association of Pilgrims of Serra do Carola, says that the village is practically unoccupied throughout the year and only during the celebration of the jubilee of Nossa Senhora das Dores, a celebration held between the second and third Sunday of the month. July, and it has been an annual event for more than seven decades that it welcomes visitors again. Unlike the others, Mr. Damião dos Santos remains living at the top of Serra do Carola every week of the year, enjoying the tranquility of the village, with the exception of the jubilee week, when Mr. Damião takes the opportunity to see his dear friends.
