In the North Caribbean of Nicaragua, are the Miskito Cays, a conglomeration of more than seventy island and mangrove formations in the spectacular and colorful Caribbean Sea. They are located 70 nautical miles north of Bilwi, the head of the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN). There it also serves as a refuge for a great variety of plants and animals, which make this place a very particular destination for the adventurous tourist. On the tour to the Miskito Cays, you will be able to see small fishing communities living in wooden houses built on the water. They are communities isolated from the world and dedicated to artisanal fishing. This place can only be reached by boat, which takes approximately three hours. Getting there is a journey, and staying is quite an adventure. Returning to Bilwi you will be able to enjoy the best of seafood. In the different restaurants you will find the most delicious seafood, as well as fish rondón, beef rondón, seafood soup, lobster and mixed ceviche, and of course flour tortillas. In the communities you will find the traditional luk luk soup, clam and wabul soup, and wapi (fresh fermented rice) drinks, and of course the traditional coconut bread, yuca cake, patty, among other tasty foods and drinks. Among the artistic expressions and displays of the North Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, the King Pulanka dance stands out, one of the longest-running indigenous festivities in Nicaragua. This municipality has 74 indigenous towns and ethnic communities in the rural area and 24 neighborhoods in the urban area. Its population continues to be heterogeneous due to its multi-ethnic character; there are Miskitu, Mestizo, Creole and Mayangna ethnic groups here. If you want to learn about the history and culture of the Caribbean Coast, you must stay at the Judith Kain House Museum, which has four exhibition halls displaying different themes related to the culture of different ethnic groups, dance, music, ethnographic collections of the history and culture of the municipality, paintings by local artists and murals, photographic exhibitions, and autonomous processes of the Caribbean Coast, among other topics. In the architecture of the city of Bilwi, the Moravian Miskitu Church stands out: it is a traditional German construction, with more than 97 years of existence, the urban Creole houses are of British colonial style and in the communities the style that is built is wooden stilt houses. The municipality is also known for its port, one of the most important in the Nicaraguan Caribbean, promoting commercial exchange in the area through exports and imports. To get to this municipality you had to travel by air before; by land it was an odyssey, today, with this magnificent highway of hydraulic concrete, it is a pleasure to travel by bus or private vehicle. The city of Bilwi is located 560 kilometers from Managua. It borders Waspam to the north, Prinzapolka to the south, the Caribbean Sea to the east and Rosita and Waspam to the west. While in the city you can get around by taxi or bus, there are a variety of hotels and restaurants. We invite you to visit the North Caribbean Coast, a place full of culture, tradition, with picturesque landscapes, and surrounded by a navy blue that you will love.
