After the end of World War I, the Germans recognized the importance and usefulness of parachutists in wars of aggression. The Luftwaffe set up a training center and began building up troops. The soldiers learned how to jump and land, how to fold their parachutes, and how to use their weapons and equipment. The world-famous JUNKERS JU 52 served as the jumpers' transport aircraft. The parachutists were involved in the occupations of Holland, Belgium, France, and Yugoslavia, but they were particularly important in the conquest of Greece. In order to drive the British troops out of the country, the Germans had to conquer the strategically important city of Corinth. They managed to do this within a few days. The next target was Crete, the only part of Greece that was still in British hands. With a revolutionary concept, a strategically strong and well-defended island was conquered by air raid for the first time in history. The paratroopers thus became the flagship force of the German army.
