In 1962-1963, a hybrid model was developed with the engine of the most popular Soviet truck GAZ-51 and using units and parts of the then pre-production vehicle with a higher load capacity GAZ-53. GAZ-52 in various modifications was produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1964 to mid-1993. However, GAZ-51 was produced in parallel with GAZ-52 until 1975. 1,006,330 units of GAZ-52 vehicles were produced. After 1993, GAZ-52 was replaced by newer models "GAZelle" and "Valdai", filling the gap in the market of GAZ light commercial vehicles.
