The film deals with Gallus' pilgrimage and the founding of the first cell in St. Gallen. When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, Celtic traditions and Christian lifestyles blended seamlessly. An early monastic culture emerged. Some of the monks chose the austere island life. Others left their homeland to proclaim the praises of God. One of them is Saint Gallus. Together with his teacher Columban, he reached the European mainland by sea. The monks endured all kinds of hardships to spread the Christian religion. When Gallus fell ill with a severe fever, he was left behind at his own request. After his recovery, he retreated to the wild Steinach Valley, where he encountered a bear at night. He founded the first cell in the same place.
