It is hard to imagine what would have happened if the report and the call for action had been confirmed. Over 270 people were on board the train. Around 110 emergency services were immediately alerted. Smoke alarms went off in a fully occupied Intercity Express because a component of the train was getting too hot. This was followed by a series of breakdowns in communication with the railway. The fire brigade was informed of a fully occupied train on fire. The freight station was given as the location of the incident, but the ICE was parked two kilometres further away at the water tower. That is where the disaster continued. The emergency doors could not be opened and railway officials did not have a key. The fire brigade therefore used portable ladders to climb over the walls. Another problem was then finding the affected train among the numerous trains parked there. And finally, the tracks next to the ICE were not even cordoned off when the fire brigade was looking for the source of the fire. An evaluation meeting between the fire brigade and the railway is to take place next week. About the video: The professional fire brigade, station 2, the volunteer fire brigade Erfurt-Dittelstedt, Melchendorf, as well as the rescue service with an ambulance and emergency rescue vehicle (both ASB) and the state police with three radio patrol cars, the T6.1 being new.
