As you know, a life sentence does not mean that a criminal who receives such a sentence will be locked up for the rest of his life. Even a brutal murderer can be released after, say, 25 years if he behaves in an exemplary manner in prison. How does a man who has been in prison for 38 consecutive years adapt to the life of a free person? Do we have to fear a person who has spent his entire adult life among criminals? Can we believe him? I sought answers to these and other important questions from Estonia's longest-serving prisoner, a man sentenced to death at one time, who has been breathing the air of the free world for 3 years now. We also toured the gloomy prison building of Patarei, which was his residence for a long time.
