This is the appeal of the Colombian Andes. They allow you to travel from the Andean jungle to the glacial summit, crossing the vast moors in between. Pure variety, pure mountains… pure life! The Colombian Andes are located in the northern part of this mountain range, which is the longest in the world. The Los Nevados National Natural Park is located in the Central Mountain Range of Colombia. Here you will find a handful of high peaks: two five-thousanders (the Nevados del Ruiz and del Tolima) and several 4,000-metre peaks (such as the Nevado de Santa Isabel and the Paramillos del Cisne, Quindío and Santa Rosa). In this report I tell you how we climbed the Nevado del Tolima, 5,220 m high. We organized our activity in five days. On the first day we climbed from the Cocora Valley, at 2,400 m above sea level, to the Buenos Aires Farm, at almost 3,800 m. On the second day we walked along the Paramillo del Quindío ridge, at more than 4,700 m above sea level, and from there we descended to the La Playa Farm, at 3,700 m. On the third day we climbed to the Arenales Camp, at 4,400 m. On the fourth day we climbed to the summit of the Nevado del Tolima (5,220 m), and then descended to the La Playa Farm. And on the fifth day we returned to the Cocora Valley, crossing the San José Canyon. On this adventure I am accompanied by Diego Zurek, a Colombian mountain guide with whom I have forged a good friendship after sharing a week of mountaineering and countless conversations about mountains and life itself. The most special memory I have of this trip is that of the hospitality of its people. The farmers who run the farms, the mountaineers and guides (like Diego, Sebastian, German and Cesar), the muleteers, the workers at the National Park. To all of you: THANK YOU for showing me the essence of Colombia and welcoming me to your mountains for a few days. Colombia is a really COOL country for adventure and mountaineering.
