María Saavedra Inaraja, historian and director of the CEU Elcano International Chair. The Conference evokes the crucial role that Spain played in the exploration and domination of the Pacific Ocean for several centuries. From the first circumnavigation by Juan Sebastián Elcano, which demonstrated the immensity and connectivity of the oceans, to the discovery of the return route by Andrés de Urdaneta, which allowed the safe return from the Philippines to America, Spain consolidated its influence on the commercial and maritime routes of the Pacific. These feats not only expanded the geographical horizon of the time, but also established commercial and cultural connections that lasted for centuries. During this period, Spanish domination of the Pacific transformed the ocean into a vital communication route between Asia, America and Europe. The Manila Galleon, a symbol of this power, allowed the exchange of goods, ideas and cultures between the continents. This "Spanish lake" was essential to the global trade of the time, marking the beginning of a process of early globalization, with repercussions that extended beyond the economic, also impacting art, religion and international relations in the Hispanic world.
