Four-masted barque PEKING - Installation of the yards on the mizzen mast When installing the first two yards, which weigh several tons, on the mizzen mast of the PEKING, the riggers were in charge at the Peters shipyard in Wewelsfleth on February 3, 2020. At the riggers' hand signals, the crane driver lifted the yards one after the other into position. There, riggers attached them to the mast with the rack. With the installation of the first yards on the mizzen mast, the completion of the PEKING restoration work is also getting a little closer. The Hamburg Maritim Foundation is therefore on schedule. The yards carry the square sails and are movably attached to the masts and topmasts. A characteristic of a four-masted barque is that the front three masts are equipped with square sails, with the PEKING having six per mast. The mizzen mast, on the other hand, only has one gaff sail. All four masts of the PEKING have been preserved in their original state, but had to be thoroughly renovated. The so-called masts, the extensions of the masts above the crosstrees, no longer existed and had to be replaced. The yards and masts for the rig of the PEKING were manufactured in the shipbuilding hall of the Peters shipyard. In nautical jargon, the rig is the term used to describe the entire rigging. Of the 18 yards of the PEKING, two were still preserved. Extant drawings were used to reconstruct the missing yards. The experts also based their work on the two yards that were still there. In the past, the yards and masts were made using rivets, which is no longer practiced today. This restoration phase was also a particular challenge for the shipbuilding specialists. It was possible to recreate the yards in an authentic shape using modern processes. The basic elements of the yards and masts were preformed from steel plates on the bending machine in Holland and delivered to Wewelsfleth as half pipe segments. There were over 400 half shells that were welded at the shipyard to form conical tubes with a reveal. The fittings, which are faithfully reproduced from the original, were manufactured entirely in Wewelsfleth. More about the four-masted barque PEKING at: https://stiftung-hamburg-maritim.de/s... Special thanks go to the members of the Bundestag Johannes Kahrs and Rüdiger Kruse, whose commitment made the PEKING project possible. Thanks also to the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media for the funding and support and to the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media for helping with the implementation. The Hamburg Maritim Foundation is responsible for the restoration and will remain the owner of the PEKING until it is handed over to the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation. #PEKING #Fourmastedbarque #StiftungHamburgMaritim #Sailingship #FlyingPLiner #Tallsailingship #Fourmaster #Museumship #TallshipPEKING #FourmasterPEKING #Hansahafen #Harbor #Hamburg #Elbe #Volunteering #peterswerft +++++++++++++++++++++ Stiftung Hamburg Maritim https://www.stiftung-hamburg-maritim.de
