Numbers 20 1 When the children of Israel, the whole congregation, arrived in the wilderness of Zin, in the first month, the people remained in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and there she was buried. 2 And there was no water for the congregation; then they gathered together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people contended with Moses, saying, O that we had perished when our brethren perished before the Lord! 4 And why have you brought the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our beasts should die here? 5 And why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? a place where there is no seed, no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, no water to drink. 6 Then Moses and Aaron went from before the people to the door of the tent of meeting, and fell on their faces; and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 8 Take the rod, and gather the congregation together, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water; so you will draw water for them from the rock, and give the congregation and their animals to drink. 9 Then Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he had commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and Moses said to them, Hear now, you rebels, shall we draw water for you from this rock? 11 Then Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice with his rod, and much water came out; and the congregation and their animals drank. 12 And the Lord said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. 13 These are the waters of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the Lord; and sanctified himself in them.
