Along with its closely-related relative, the spotted porgy, it is known as a bottom fish, and a rock angler who specializes in bottom fish is called a bottom fisherman. Yoichiro Hashimoto has been standing on the rocks chasing black porgy for nearly half a century, and is a legendary true bottom fisherman. He visits his hometown of Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, about 100 days a year, and continues to catch an astonishing number of fish, about 100 every year.
