Exactly 20,964 name suggestions were received for the polar bear girl at Schönbrunn Zoo. Today, on World Polar Bear Day, it has been decided: the little one will be called Finja. "We are very happy about the enormous interest and would like to thank you very much for all the suggestions. It took a few extra shifts to sift through all the suggestions. We didn't expect so many," says zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, overwhelmed. The animal keeper team did not make the choice lightly. "In the end, we decided on Finja because the name has a nice sound and goes well with the names of the parents Nora and Ranzo. Finja means white and beautiful, which is of course very appropriate for our polar bear girl," explains animal keeper Alessa Esau. While many people were pondering over a suitable name, the polar bear girl has made great progress. Esau: "Finja is really adventurous and keeps her mother on her toes. It's great fun to watch them." The polar bear girl clearly already has fans all over the world. The name suggestions came not only from all over Austria, but also from Germany, Japan, Estonia and the USA. It seemed as though the entire Internet was searched for suitable Nordic names. The visitors' explanations, some of which were very detailed, show how much thought they put into them. Parents often submitted suggestions for their children, and retirement homes, clubs and numerous school classes also took part in the name search. The entire coming weekend at Schönbrunn Zoo is dedicated to World Polar Bear Day. There is a large family program all about the endangered white bears. Children learn through play why there are only around 20,000 polar bears left in the Arctic and what contribution everyone can make to climate protection. In the game "Which choice is more polar bear-friendly?" they guess what is better for the climate: a local apple or an exotic mango, a trip by tram or by car. A pack ice puzzle brings the problem of the melting habitat closer to home. You can marvel at a collar transmitter similar to that of the polar bear "Hope Vienna", whose migration routes are being researched by the organization Polar Bears International (PBI) with the help of the Schönbrunn Zoo.
