On October 7, 2004, the village baker Alfred B. robbed the savings bank branch in Siegelsbach in the Heilbronn district. He killed a customer and seriously injured a man and the bank employee. What followed was a legal thriller. In a circumstantial evidence trial lasting over a year, Alfred B. was surprisingly acquitted despite overwhelming evidence and witness statements. The acquittal was then overturned by the Federal Court of Justice and B. had to stand trial again - this time in Stuttgart. We spoke to reporter Tanja Wolter, who covered the case at the time, about why the baker robbed the bank in his own village, how the controversial acquittal came about - and how the convicted man is doing today.
