He said: Which of you is closest in lineage to this man who claims to be a prophet? Abu Sufyan said: I said: I am the closest of them in lineage. He said: Bring him close to me and bring his companions close and make them stand behind him. Then he said to his interpreter: Tell them: I am going to ask this man, and if he lies to me, then lie to him, for by God, were it not for the shame of them attributing a lie to me, I would have lied about him. Then the first thing he asked me about him was: How is his lineage among you? I said: He is of good lineage among us. He said: Has anyone among you ever said this before him? I said: No. He said: Was there a king among his ancestors? I said: No. He said: Do the nobles of the people follow him or the weak among them? I said: The weak among them. He said: Do they increase or decrease? I said: Rather, they increase. He said: Does any of them turn away from his religion in discontent after entering it? I said: No. He said: Did you accuse him of lying before he said what he said? I said: No. He said: Does he betray? I said: No, and we are in a period of time with him and we do not know what he will do in it. He said: And I could not say a word in which I could insert anything other than this word. He said: Did you fight him? I said: Yes. He said: How was your fight with him? I said: The war between us and him is a debate, he gets from us and we get from him. He said: What does he command you? I said: He says: Worship Allah alone and do not associate anything with Him, and leave what your fathers say, and he commands us to pray, give zakat, be truthful, be chaste, and maintain kinship. He said to the interpreter: Tell him: I asked you about his lineage and you mentioned that he is of noble lineage among you, and so are messengers sent according to the lineage of their people. I asked you if anyone had said this? You said no. I said: If anyone had said this before him, you would have said: A man is following a saying that was said before him. I asked you if any of his fathers were kings? You said no. I said: If any of his fathers were kings, you would have said: A man seeking his father’s kingdom. I asked you if you accused him of lying before he said what he said? I said, "No, for I know that he would not leave lying to people and lie about Allah." I asked you, "Did the nobles of the people follow him or the weak among them?" You said, "The weak among them followed him, and they are the followers of the Messengers." I asked you, "Do they increase or decrease?" You said, "They increase." And so is the matter of faith until it is complete. I asked you, "Does anyone turn away from his religion out of discontent after entering it?" You said, "No." And so is faith when its cheerfulness mixes with the hearts. I asked you, "Does he betray?" You said, "No." And so are the prophets who do not betray." I asked you, "What does he command?" You said, "He commands you to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him." He forbids you from worshipping idols, and commands you to pray, be truthful, and be chaste. If what you say is true, then he will own the place where my feet are. I knew that he would come out, but I did not think that he was one of you. If I had known that I would reach him, I would have taken the trouble to meet him. If I were with him, I would have washed his feet."
