After 35 years with the German army, Sergeant Major Josef Windirsch is retiring. The celebration to mark his departure is anything but ordinary. His comrades from the 1st Company of the 4th Supply Battalion in Roding in Upper Palatinate have come up with all sorts of ideas for the occasion. Josef Windirsch has earned numerous merits during his long service. Windirsch was lucky enough to be able to spend almost his entire service at various locations in his home region of Upper Palatinate. Half a dozen foreign missions took him from there to Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. For the last 15 years, Josef Windirsch was a company sergeant, i.e. he was "the sergeant". And the trained repairman always wanted to be "the man with the yellow cord". He always had an open ear for the concerns or problems of his soldiers. Like no other, Josef Windirsch embodies the qualities that a company sergeant must have: strength of character and knowledge of human nature, empathy but also assertiveness. A sergeant often has to show creativity and imagination, because much of what he has to deal with is not covered by any service regulations. And it was precisely here that Josef Windirsch often took unconventional approaches when it came to solving problems. For him, daily duty did not end when he left the barracks. Josef Windirsch has now left his numerous official obligations behind. But the 54-year-old will not be bored: he now wants to devote more time to his family and the sports club in his home town of Pleystein, where he has also been involved in local politics for many years.
