On December 16, 1981, units of the Citizens' Militia and the ZOMO, supported by the army, brutally pacified a strike at the "Wujek" Coal Mine in Katowice. Protesting miners demanded the release of "Solidarity" activists detained on the night of December 12-13, including Jan Ludwiczak, chairman of the "Solidarity" Plant Commission, and the lifting of martial law. A total of about three thousand people went on strike. The authorities sent 1,471 Citizens' Militia and the ZOMO officers to the mine, as well as 760 soldiers with 22 tanks and 44 combat vehicles. Just after 8 a.m., the "Wujek" area was surrounded. After calling on the strikers to disperse (the unmoved protesters sang, among other things, Mazurek Dąbrowskiego), water cannons and gas launchers were used. Then the assault on the mine began. The greatest drama took place around 7 a.m. 12.30, when a special platoon of the ZOMO entered the action. Officers equipped with submachine guns opened fire, killing six miners on the spot. Another three died in the hospital. 23 miners were wounded. It was the bloodiest pacification action during martial law. Here is the list of the miners from "Wujek" who were killed: Józef Czekalski (48 years old), Krzysztof Giza (24 years old), Joachim Gnida (28 years old), Ryszard Gzik (35 years old), Bogusław Kopczak (28 years old), Andrzej Pełka (19 years old), Jan Stawisiński (21 years old), Zbigniew Wilk (30 years old), Zenon Zając (22 years old). We are sharing the next episode of the film series "Ekspertyza", produced by the TVP Historia channel in cooperation with #IPN and the Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków. The documentary entitled "Ekspertyza. The massacre of miners in the "Wujek" mine was produced in 2020.
