Caribbean feeling on the outskirts of Munich: In Munich Hallbergmoos, the first German championship took place in the newly opened O2 Surftown for the first time in 28 years on German soil. The previous venue was the French Atlantic coast. It was a spectacle for the spectators and I was thrilled by the facility, the atmosphere and of course by the athletic performance of the surfers. Rain, wind and cold - the water temperature was around 13 degrees by the way - could not spoil the excellent atmosphere and you could tell that the athletes were really having fun in the brand new wave pool that was built this year. For me, it was very impressive what wave size was technically achieved. I was already impressed by surfing at the Olympic Games (Paris 2024). The impressions from Tahiti, where the surfing competitions took place, were fascinating. I was able to build on that fascination in the Surftown and would definitely like to be there again at the next event. I am particularly grateful that the athletes are in such a good mood. I had the honor of conducting short interviews with some Olympic participants (Leon Glatzer, Tokyo 2021, and Camilla Kemp and Tim Elter, who were in Paris 2024). Many greetings to the entire surfing community, but also to the organizer and the super-friendly Surftown team on site. I would also like to thank them for the filming permission. Background: The O2 Surftown Arena opened in August 2024 and is the largest surf park in Europe. The facility is only about 5 minutes from Munich Airport and offers ideal surfing conditions for beginners and professionals. I was also impressed by the architecture, because it is even possible to watch the hustle and bustle from the roof. The wave pool must be a paradise for all surfers, I definitely enjoyed being there as a spectator. A total of around 10,000 visitors came to Surftown this October weekend (October 11-13, 2024).
