About :

Sweet and sour blood oranges, sun-kissed mandarins and refreshing pomelos – citrus fruits evoke summer feelings and a good mood! But where do the coveted southern fruits come from? And what problems does growing them entail? To find out, taster Björn Freitag travels to Andalusia (Spain) and gets an insight into a conventional orange plantation with a new approach. Sugary sweet, bitter-tart or refreshingly sour – citrus fruits in their colorful variety cater to every taste. Pomelo, mandarin, lemon, orange, kumquat or grapefruit: – as different as they may be, all citrus fruits known today have a common ancestor: the Chinese box orange. Three main groups developed from it around seven million years ago: the ancestors of citrons, mandarins and grapefruits. These three original citrus fruits gave rise to numerous other species. The orange evolved from the grapefruit, the lemon is a cross between the citron and the bitter orange, which in turn is a hybrid between a mandarin and a grapefruit. Shopping tips Juicy, aromatic and fresh, citrus fruits are particularly popular. But how can you recognize these properties in the supermarket? Lemons should be bought plump and bright yellow. Large and light fruits are less juicy and have a thick skin, while small, heavy fruits are very juicy. Juicy oranges can be recognized by their fine-pored skin. Fruits with particularly coarse pores usually have a very thick skin, which is detrimental to the pulp. Medium-sized fruits have the largest proportion of pulp. When buying mandarins, you should be careful not to buy fruits with airy or too dry skin, as they will then taste straw-like and less aromatic. Health Citrus fruits are considered real vitamin C bombs. With 51 mg per 100 g, the lemon contains the most vitamin C of all citrus fruits. The orange comes in second with 45 mg, followed by the grapefruit (41 mg) and the mandarin (30 mg). The "hot lemon" is a popular classic for colds. However, the positive effect of vitamin C is less acute for colds, but rather has a preventative effect by supporting the immune system. Vitamin C is very sensitive to heat, so lemon juice should be filled with cold water. The drink can then be heated to drinking temperature - this way more vitamin C is retained. The "lukewarm lemon" is therefore healthier than the "hot lemon". Environmental sin or delicious little fruit?
