Free security updates for Windows 10 are due to be released for the last time in October 2025. After that, it's not a good idea to continue to go online with a Windows 10 computer. Unpatched security holes then quickly become a gateway for viruses and Trojans. But upgrading to Windows 11 has some pitfalls: Microsoft has raised the official hardware requirements for the successor to Windows 10 to absurd heights. Many users have to invest money in buying a new version or at least in upgrading. And not everyone who is now legally using Windows 10 will be able to enjoy the often-touted free update, because Microsoft's licensing policy is opaque in some places. In this episode of c't uplink, we talk about how to check whether your computer is sufficient for Windows 11 and how best to proceed if Microsoft disqualifies it. With: Benjamin Kraft, Peter Siering, Christof Windeck Moderation: Stefan Porteck Production: Ralf Taschke In the cover story of c't 22/2024 you will find tips and tricks for upgrading, an explanation of who gets Windows 11 for free, as well as buying advice and a construction suggestion for everyone who needs to upgrade or convert. ► c't Magazin: https://ct.de ► c't on Mastodon: https://social.heise.de/@ct_Magazin ► c't on Instagram: / ct_magazin ► c't on Facebook: / ctmagazin ► c't on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/heisec.bsky.... ► c't on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@ct_magazin ► c't on X/Twitter: / ctmagazin ► c't on paper: wherever there are magazines!
