Since 2014, the mouth has also been tackled as part of the Emscher reconstruction. An estuary floodplain with several river branches is to be created in order to ecologically improve the Emscher estuary. In November 2022, the floodplain was flooded and ceremoniously inaugurated. However, the reconstruction is not yet complete. The cycle path that leads around the new mouth and connects to the old path still has to be built over the dike.
